When we arrived at the NGO this morning there was an odd sort of rustling around. When we came in the gate there was blood on the floor, at and NGO where everyone is HIV positive. But none of the women where hurt, the dog who just gave birth to six puppies had a huge cut on its shoulder and deep, and was bleeding all over the place and trying to lick it up. Thankfully the floor of the NGO was dirt where the dog was so the women just kept shuffling the dirt around to cover up the bloody spots. But the puppies kept rubbing up against their mother so they were also covered in blood. People don’t treat animals very well, especially in countries where people are just trying to survive animals are really low on the list. This dog however, had a name, a collar and a family so the vet was called. He took over an hour to show up, with an assistant and what looked like my 4th grade lunch box. He slowly slipped a leather muzzle over Mammochka’s mouth (mother in Russian) I don’t know why that’s her name but she is one of the family, so mother seems appropriate. Plus many of the women refer to one another as big sister, little sister or mom so its normal. He then had to hold her down to clean it out. I walked away, the sound was enough, she really need stitches but he just cleaned it out and said he would come everyday for four days to clean it out.
