Chickens

When Mirabelle and I drive to work we always pass this stall where I’ve seen a handicapped man sitting with these little sculptures. A side note about people who are crippled here, and I’m talking about their legs, wheelchairs are too expensive for people, and to repair them is just not possible. I’ve seen this in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania as well, but bikes are made with petals for your hands and a storage compartment below for them to put their supplies. I need to get a picture of one to show you, but it a little weird taking a picture of someone disabled so I’ll ask when I see an empty bike. But they are essentially the same as hand peddled bikes in the US, just constructed by a metal craftsman instead. But Mirabelle says often when people are crippled they beg for money because people were more likely to give it to them, and she said this guy that we drive by is an artist and instead of begging he sells his birds. I’m talking about the same bird my cleaning woman broke and I had fixed. She said he makes them as a copy of a type of chicken they have here. I bought the sculptures but I hadn’t seen the real thing yet, until today. I woke up and opened my door to find 4 of these birds in front of my apartment. Their legs were tied together, so they couldn’t get away and I think by now they are someone’s dinner but they were beautiful. So I took a picture of both so you could see them.

I love them!
