Darkness

April 4, 2011

The nighttime is my least favorite part about my stay here. I hate the night, even in Sweden. I love sleeping with windows open but I hate that it makes someone think that they can come inside. Even though I lock the front door, and lock my bedroom door, and that it would take either a tank or a person with super powers to get into my room without me noticing still doesn’t allow me to fall asleep. The fan makes weird noises all night and my neighbors make noises all night and there is a walk way right behind my house where I have one window and people can see in if I don’t close it. Of course the window is covered in metal bars so there is no hope to get inside but I’ve just never been good at being alone and it truly shows at night.

When you turn off the lights here its not like the darkness you see in the US or in Sweden. It is dark literally black. There are no electrical outlets with tiny red lights, or laptop computers plugged in blinking a little blue light. It is dark. SO dark you could be in there all night hoping your eyes will adjust and nothing happens. I’d like to sleep with the bathroom light on but I also don’t want to get mosquitoes and get malaria, its catch -22. Be able to sleep or get malaria.

Secretly I’m hoping I overcome this fear on my own and am able to move past it to be able to sleep. But so far after two nights I’ve had no success. But it’s cooler tonight so I have high hopes. And by cooler, I mean its 90 degrees. But today someone told me it usually rains by the middle of May so I’m looking forward to come cool downs!

but you'll be happy to know i've discovered a trick, listening to my i pod while its light is still turned on keeps the bugs away and me at ease. Thank you modern technology for helping me sleep. The temperature also dropped two degree last night which made a huge difference.
